S.E.G.U.E presents The History of the Ukulele

From Tin Pan Alley to Tiny Tim, from George Formby to George Harrison, from Waikiki to the World Wide Web, the ukulele has a colourful and fascinating story to tell. Hawaiians called it the ‘leaping flea’ when it arrived in Honolulu Harbour in 1879, and since then, it’s leapt from being a gentle accompaniment to the hula to a virtuoso instrument and an international craze.

SEGUE will strum, pluck and warble the history of the uke, in slideshow and song, on instruments ranging from the vintage Hawaiian, the Arthur Godfrey plastic ‘Islander’, to the 1960s Tombo electric. Be regaled by songs for and about the uke, and true tales of its makers and players. Lean on a Lamppost, Tiptoe Through the Tulips and Make Love, Ukulele Style as SEGUE presents their tribute to the tiny instrument with a huge heart that has brought us all together.
