The show will consist of canvas painted ‘sideshow style’ banners as well as smaller work on paper and canvas. The work will look at the human ‘freak’, the exotic, and the odd, all who featured as the main source of entertainment in travelling sideshows from the 1840’s to the mid 20th century. The attraction of sideshows reduced as public conscience changed and they became distasteful. What is beautiful? exotic? ugly? freaky? odd? And how much does that change over time?
Sideshow will be on display for the entire Fringe Festival at the Fringe Hub, Old Hospital, 1 Halford St, Castlemaine. Opening hours 10-5pm.
