My name is Paloma White and I have been a practising visual artist for thirty years. Inspired by botany, and exploring the landscapes of this beautiful country, I am excited to share my studio and offer an insight into my process and inspirations.

PAINTING

Drawing inspiration from many painters and using my own imagination I create narrative paintings, landscapes and portraits. I develop ideas for paintings using a variety of sources and after preliminary sketches produce large, clear, colourful and detailed canvases.

Ben Laycock began drawing the natural world around him from a very early age. As a painter his main focus is the environment and his work is influenced by his extensive travels throughout Australia and the surroundings of his hand made house in Barkers Creek.

PRINTMAKING

Castlemaine Press is a community access printmaking studio located in the Lot 19 precinct. Come and see printmakers in action, together with a variety of works created at press workshops and exhibitions. Look out for special demonstrations on the Castlemaine Press website.

TEXTILES & MIXED MEDIA

Colleen’s textile, mixed media and assemblage is inspired by folklore, fable, nostalgia and allusion. Brian’s watercolour, pen and ink, printing and photography is inspired by ecology.

POTTERY

There are four words that perfectly sum up the pottery of Dusty Pots: fun, colourful, and unapologetically feminist. Combining feminine colours and designs with strong feminist messages, Dusty Pots aims to show that femininity and strength are not mutually exclusive.

PAINTING

My preferred genre is contemporary/abstract painting. My most recent works explore the way I can manipulate shape and movement on canvas. I work intuitively and search for shape/form and layer the paint so the brush marks and previous layers remain.

ABSTRACT PAINTINGS

Paul Cavell, painter and printmaker, has exhibited widely since 1973. He has won a number of arts prizes. Hundreds of his works are represented in public, corporate and private collections, nationally and internationally, and several regional art galleries.

STUDIO 77

Julie Shaw exhibits her colourful mosaics, which are waterproof and can hang outside. Judy Wild is a realist artist. Her work ranges from botanical to still life, landscapes & seascapes. Using watercolour, coloured pencils, oils & acrylics.

PRINTMAKING

Penny Peckham, will open her studio to visitors, offering gelplate printing demonstrations and the experience of a working print studio. You can chat with the artist and perhaps see her working on an artist book or adding stitched details to a unique print.

CERAMICS

Handbuilt ceramic workshops for children and adults will take place in the mornings in the open studio of Ann Ferguson where handbuilt ceramics by Ann Ferguson and Kaori Fujimoto will be on display and for sale to the public over the weekends of the festival.

GROUP SHOW

Blakeley Art Collective studio is in a beautiful bush setting and is exhibiting the work of four artists. Painting, printmaking, drawing, landscape, portraits, still life, abstract and textile design will be exhibited and available for purchase.

DRAWINGS, LITHOGRAPHS & ZINES

Meticulous drawing is the basis for Catherine’s practice encompassing lithographs, drawings and sometimes textiles – with absence, contemporary still life and historical narratives influencing her subject matter. Catherine has exhibited widely since 1994, when she returned to Australia after studying in Washington DC.

CERAMICS

Fluxed earth is the collaborative ceramic practice of Rye Senjen and Kirstie Murdoch.Our current focus is on vessels with highly textured surfaces referencing insect activity and fungal and plant growth patterns, and sculptural works reflecting on ancient protectors and ritual vessels.

SCULPTURE

“Where the wild things grow” is a new show by local wire knitter/sculptor Jody Galvin. Inspired by the magical colours that nature provides, Galvin has created a wilderness of wonder for all to enjoy. BYO imagination!

THE LEFT BANK GALLERY

The LEFT BANK Gallery / Open Studio is in the heart of Castlemaine. Housed in the 1861 Oriental Bank is a beautifully ornate front chamber that contrasts and complements the contemporary art work.

I have been painting in this art studio for the last two years having returned from Boston USA. I paint in an impressionist and abstract style mainly in acrylics. I take most of my inspiration from the environments in which I have lived.

We create using various techniques, dyeing, spinning, weaving, knitting, felting, silversmithing. We use a variety of materials, silk, wool, glass, metal, wood and more. Inspired by our conversations, the rural environment of Taradale, life experiences and the material itself to create and explore.

Clayton Tremlett is a renowned contemporary artist/printmaker who exhibits regularly in public and regional galleries. He is distinguished for his linocut portraiture; however, he also works with etching and screen printing to produce wallpapers, artist’s books, installations and editioned prints.

When you enter my studio you will see a wide range of subject matter painted in oils on canvas or linen. I am a contemporary realist artist and I just love using lots of colour to paint still life subjects, birds and the occasional landscape.

JEWELLERY

Sarah Fowler’s work is created entirely by hand, the passion for design and fine crafstmanship has given her a reputation for superb quality. Sarah uses traditional silversmithing techniques to create jewellery that is boldly contemporary and embedded in fundamental techniques and timeless influences.
